ensure that every mother and child has a equal chance to survive

NASG - a Garment of Life

Ifakara Health Institute and the University of California San Francisco Safe Motherhood Program have brought the non-pneumatic antishock garment (NASG) to 288 health centers and provide ongoing training and supportive supervision on the use of this life saving device. The NASG/Life Wrap is applied to women who experience hypovolemic shock due to obstetric hemorrhage so that they may be stabilized and treated. In the absence of the NASG, a woman may lose too much blood to recover, with long distances to travel to reach emergency obstetric care.

This is the largest implementation study of NASG at the primary health care facility level in conjunction with a closed user group (CUG) cell phone network enabling better communication between PHCs and referral hospitals, access to transport, and the NASG/LifeWrap, we will demonstrate improved maternal outcomes for hemorrhaging women in rural Tanzania.
